Beer-Related Point: Is Your Beer Fresh?
Beer can be a sensitive product and should be dealt with the way any other perishable meals are treated. After all you do ingest it, right? It does have a shelf-life as opposed to what a lot of us assume. Regardless of whether it has been pasteurized and triple cold-filtered, over time, the time will come that the beer will go sour and there's nothing uglier than drinking a bad brew. 1) Head to the coolers; they maintain the beer fresh. Even for a few months, each time the beer is left laying out at room temperature, it will set out to degrade and becomes stale. Fridges or cold storage also slows down oxidation in beer.
2) Search for the “best before date”. Many will have “package date”, others print the “bottled on” date just above the tag while some breweries use the freshness date in several places on the packaging and/or bottle. In case you don’t find any freshness date, be careful!
3) Don't buy beer that is hit directly by sunlight. UV rays ruins the brew. Excessive sunlight and warmth both can provide the beer a “skunky” stale flavor. That’s the result of when the delicate hop oil spoils.
4) See dusts? If yes, then avoid. It’s an indication how the beer may be sitting, dead and unmoving for a very long time.
5) Beer for sale is just a fantasy. There's no such thing! There exists a purpose though why that 6-pack is cheaper than $5. Don’t be a cheapskate.
Of course for each rule, there are exemptions. Generally, the general rule is, the larger the alcohol percentage, the longer the shelf-life. Higher-octane beers like German Bocks, Porters and Stouts, Barley Wines, many Belgian Ale styles and such do not spoil for the most part. These brews get better with age. They can go for months, even years. The preserving quality within the hop oils also give highly- hopped brews a prolonged shelf-life.
So before getting any cheap beers think twice. Obtain only the fresh ones and drink before expiration. You will also be doing yourself and others some good, if you make sure to notify the owner of the package store, or the brewer, in the event you find bad beers.
