How To Prepare White Cement Sculpting Base
White ordinary Portland cement (WOPC) or white Portland cement is quite similar to the gray Portland cement. White cement shows same properties as gray Portland cement, except for color. The strength development and setting behavior of white Portland cement is same as gray Portland cement. White Portland cement is more expensive than its gray counterpart. This type of Portland cement is available in different types, including Types I, II, III, and V. The most commonly used types are Type I and Type III.
White Portland cement is manufactured in accordance to the ASTM C 150 and EN 197 Specifications for Portland cement. White cement is prepared by burning limestone along with other raw materials at a temperature of 1450 degrees Celsius. The white color of the white Portland cement is produced by manganese and iron metal oxides. The whiteness of WOPC depends primarily on iron and manganese metal oxides.
White cement can be used in combination with pigments to produce colored mortars and concretes. It can be used to produce concrete and mortars in a variety of bright colors, including yellow, red, green and blue. White Portland cement is used in a variety of applications. It is used in construction projects, architectural, artistic and decorative applications. It is widely used to make sculptures and artificial stones.
When white cement is combined with a binder and water and allowed to dry, it becomes extremely hard. Always wear protective gloves and a mask while mixing, sanding or carving white Portland cement. Prolonged exposure to WOPC can cause cracking and burning of the skin.
Mix WOPC with a binder in a ratio of 1:1 in a five gallon bucket. You may use paper fiber insulation as binder.
Add a joint compound or concrete latex and water in a ratio of 1:4. The latex helps to give a smooth and clay like consistency to the mixture.
Mix the mortar thoroughly with your hands. Keep on mixing the cement sculpting base until it gains the consistency of modeling clay.
Create the armature for the sculpture with the help of PVC, wire or metal rods. Start adding the cement sculpting base to the structure. Give it a proper shape to create a beautiful statue.
