is it alright to put neon tetras in filtered tap water without changing the ph balance?
Answer:
Okay, well the question is, what is the pH of your water now?
Personally, I live in a place where our tap water and well water has a high pH and is hard (high in dissolved minerals) so my first try with Neon Tetras weren't that great. It's especially hard to keep water at 1 particular pH if you are using purchased chemicals from a pet store because you have to add it constantly and really, to put it bluntly, they suck and are worth crap IMO.
Neons can live in a pH anywhere between 4.5 to 7.5 so if your tap water is 8.0 then yes, you will most likely need to do something to keep the pH at a lower level. What you can do is use 25-50 percent RO, Purified or Distilled water with the tap water and see if that brings your pH level down. It's not wise to use more than 50% because of the fact that all of those processed waters don't have ANY dissolved mineral content and this can make the pH sway and cause fish deaths.
Others put all of their trust in the use of peat moss or drift wood. Personally, I think that takes a lot more effort because eventually, the tannic acid in them will all leach out and then replacement will be needed. It's totally up to you on which way you want to lower it, but make sure that you do in fact need to because things can get tricky and dangerous for the fish.
Oh yes, if you don't know already, please make sure that you keep these fish in large schools (of at least 6) because of the fact that they are most prone to a condition called Wasting Disease and they will most likely all die off.
