Frequently Asked Questions...
Tap water smells of sulfur?
I live in an apartment building. Great place, except that the cold water in the upstairs bathroom comes out of the tap smelling of sulfur. As it's only that one tap, I'm presuming it's a local thing. The city Water Authority assures me it's not harmful.
Dismissing demonic possession of the water faucet as a cause, can anyone suggest why this is happening, and, better, anything I can do to fix it? Remember, re-piping isn't an option (apartment) nor is exorcism (we Lutherans don't hold with that sort of thing).
Thanks to both of you for good answers. I picked up an inexpensive filter, connected it to the cold-water feed under the sink, and no more sulfur! (Alas, I couldn't check out the anode on the water heater, as that's somewhere else in the complex behind locked doors.)
Answer:
You can install a filter under the sink for a fairly reasonable amt. of $. The smell is more of a nusiance than it is anything else (an addtional problem associatied with sulfur is a rust colored stain that could eventually build up in the sink.) One usually finds this type of water issue with shallow well water, surprising also that it would only be one of the taps...go figure.
