Water Filtration & Purification: what you should know when buying a water purification system

Consumer awareness about water quality has increased substantially in the past decade. At Kazawest, our property managers regularly receive water filtration inquiries from commercial and residential owners & tenants, as well as condominium unit owners & strata council members. This article contains some of the collective information we recently provided to property owners, tenants, and strata condo councils.

The Basics of Water Quality

In many regions in North America, tap water can contain contaminants including ammonia, antibiotics, asbestos fibres, chlorine, cysts, hormones, parasites, lead and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The first step is to find out what the quality of the water in your area is like. Knowing this will help you choose the right filtration system. You can get this information from your municipal authority or water utility and typically they will publish an annual water quality report.

As an example of water quality information, the water of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) of British Columbia has a water supply of the following characteristics:

  • high-turbidity (particulate content in the water)
  • parasitic cysts
  • chlorine at a relatively high-level
  • soft (low levels of minerals & salts)

When choosing a water purification system, you will want to make sure that the performance specifications are acceptable. The key performance criteria to look at are:

  • Impact on Composition: The changes to the water that occur by going through the system (e.g. mineral reduction/removal, turbidity reduction, etc.). The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) produces ratings by which systems can be compared.
  • Micron Rating: The size of microscopic particles that are filtered out of your water. Particles below the micron rating will pass through.
  • Capacity: How many gallons of water your system can handle between filter changes or maintenance.
  • Maintenance Frequency: How often the system will typically need a filter change or maintenance.

Types of Filtration Systems

There are four main types of filtration systems to be knowledgeable about when making water purification decisions.

Type 1: Particle Filtration

Particle Filtration uses highly absorbent material to trap and remove impurities. Particle Filtration does not remove minerals & salts. The effectiveness of filters varies considerably between the filtration quality in the average single-stage countertop jug and a high-grade multi-stage under counter unit. Multi-stage units will typically have a 1st stage sediment filter for large particles followed by a sub-micron purifying filter. The under-counter multi-stage units typically have the highest NSF ratings.

This type of system is well suited for many different water type situations where mineral & salt removal is not desired. Relating to the example above, a good Particle Filtration unit is an excellent choice for the mineral-soft & high-turbidity water of the Vancouver Lower Mainland.

Type 2: Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis systems usually consist of a basic particle filtration system combined with a semi-permeable membrane which separates impurities from water. These systems effectively remove contaminants from water, however, there are several disadvantages to be aware of:

  • high-turbidity water will quickly pollute the membrane and degrade water quality, requiring frequent maintenance
  • up to four litres of water will be water for each litre of purified water produced
  • bacteria & parasite filtering can be less effective than submicron filtration
  • healthy minerals can be stripped and water & alkalinity can be reduced (alkaline water is considered healthier to consume)
  • water can taste flat
  • high cost to purchase & maintain

Type 3: Distillation

Distillers produce water by boiling water and then condensing the purified steam. The characteristics of these systems are very similar to Reverse Osmosis in that contaminants are effectively removed with some similar disadvantages including:

  • healthy minerals can be stripped and water & alkalinity can be reduced (alkaline water is considered healthier to consume)
  • water can taste flat
  • high cost to purchase & maintain including high electricity costs to run the system

Type 4: UV Disinfection

Ultraviolet Disinfection uses light to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. It is effective in ensuring water is free of bacteria and parasites. There are two classes of systems. Class A systems will kill harmful bacteria and viruses while Class B systems are les powerful and are designed to make non-disease-causing bacteria (aka nuisance bacteria) inactive.

Due to lack of filtration, UV Disinfection should be used in combination with one of the other above mentioned purification methods.

Maintenance

And finally, once you have achieved the water quality you desire, maintenance is necessary to maintaining quality and getting the best out of your investment. No matter what your water quality situation and what type of system you choose, property maintenance is critical.

Without proper maintenance, water quality will degrade to a point where you would be better off using no system at all! For example, when filters are not changed in a system for an extended period of time, bacterial growth will inevitably occur.

Many service provides are happy to set a standing order to make maintenance visits (if your system requires it) or automatically ship you replacement filter cartridges. Take advantage of this value-add and make sure your investment in water purification continues to provide you with clean & pure water for many years to come.

Sediment Water Filtration

Frequently Asked Questions...

I have a hot water boiler furnace system. Where is the sediment coming from in my hot water appliances? ?

I have a well, but I have filtration system on it. The sediment is coming from the hot water side. It is the consistency of sand, and the color is a reddish color. I do not have a water heater.

Answer:

do you have a water softener or neutralizer ? the resin inside the cylinder might be coming out . if not i would think if it is only on the hot side the water temp might be forming the "sand " like substance from something in the water ?
