If a Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Will Not Remove Most Contaminants, What Will?
Despite what you may have heard to the contrary, a countertop reverse osmosis water filter is by no means a water purification system. Companies that design these filters are trying to take advantage of a growing, valid concern over the level of contamination of our water supply. They are trying to sell people appliances that are inadequate in removing the variety of contaminants in our water supply.
The basic design of one of these units typically involves the use of a porous membrane filter designed for the removal of particulates in the water, and a granular carbon pre-filter. Sometimes these products feature a second granular carbon filter, for lack of a better term a "post-filter. Let me tell you a little bit about the purpose of these filters; you will see that this sort of appliance is not the answer you are looking for.
The activated granular carbon pre-filter, that comes standard with these countertop reverse osmosis units, is designed to trap chlorine and other chemical agents so that they don't end up in your drinking glass. Preventing the consumption of chlorine is extremely important, because this chemical agent is routinely present in your water and it is a recognized carcinogen.
Chlorine is capable not only of causing cancer, but it also affects the smell and taste of your water. Still, this chemical is one of more than 2,100 carcinogens present in our water supply, and these carcinogens only make up a fraction of the total chemical content of our water. An activated granular carbon filter is not capable of removing all of the hazardous chemicals present in our water, and it requires help from another type of filter in order that all of the chemicals are blocked.
Therefore, if an activated granular carbon filter is not adequate for removing all of the chemicals present in our water, why does a countertop reverse osmosis system feature a second carbon filter? The first filter is adequate for removing up to 99% of the list of chemicals it is designed to block. What good is a second filter if it removes the remaining 1% of these agents, while allowing other chemicals to pass freely?
What an effective water purification system has in addition to an activated granular carbon filter is known as a multi media block. This additional filter will remove all chemical media that the carbon filter is not designed to remove, thereby virtually eliminating the threat posed by any of the chemicals in our water. Also, what about the health threat posed by surviving microbes and toxic heavy metal traces in the water?
In order to remove metal traces and microbes from your drinking water, your purification system must have an ion exchange and sub micron filters in place. The countertop reverse osmosis systems don't offer either of these important features. And the porous membrane filter, that these systems use, is to remove particulates from your water. That was already taken care of at the treatment facility; that filter is useless to you.
