Sulfur Water Filters – Tips for Clean, Odorless Water
Lots of people have a problem with water that smells like rotten eggs. This can make drinking it, cooking with it and showering in it a nasty experience. The smell and bitter taste is caused by too much sulfur in the water system. It is possible to get a good sulfur water filter for an affordable price that will eliminate this problem and leave you with clear, fresh water that does not smell.
Which sulfur water filter you need will depend on:
- the amount of sulfate in the water
- the amount of iron and manganese in the water
- whether or not there is also bacterial contamination
- how much water needs to be treated… i.e just drinking water or whole house
What are Sulfates and Why are they in Your Water?
Sulfates are a combination of sulfur and oxygen. They are part of naturally occurring minerals that dissolve and are released over time into groundwater. Then it makes its way into our homes and eventually through our faucets.
There is no great health risk to having hydrogen sulfide in the water. It is mostly just a nuisance as it has such an awful rotten egg smell and a bitter taste. It can however cause scale buildup in the water pipes and it has also been known to have a laxative effect on some people.
How to Eliminate the Sulfur from the Water
It is a good idea to eliminate the sulfur from your water. This can be done through a few different methods:
For small quantities of water:
- Distillation can be used for small amounts of water. This is basically just boiling the water to form steam, then cooling the water and later recondensing the water. This method is really a bit of a hassle and not many are willing to do this whenever they want a drink or to use the water for cooking.
- Reverse Osmosis is likely the most common way to filter drinking and cooking water. Usually this will be an under the sink filtration system and it works great for getting rid of many different contaminants. This method tends to be quite popular as it is very affordable and easy.
For larger quantities of water:
- For a whole house system that will clean all of the water that runs through your pipes, the most common method would be ion exchange. The ion-exchange resin which is contained inside the unit will absorb the sulfate. Usually the resin must be regenerated with a salt brine solution consistently.
There are a lot of good water filters on the market but certainly a few do stand out above the rest. By reading some reviews it will not be hard to find the right sulfur water filter for you. Luckily sulfur is easily removed and before you know it you will have water that tastes and smells clean and fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions...
How can you keep your fish tank water so clean and clear?
My fish tank water isn't that clear. I have gold fish. What can I do to keep it crystal clear
Answer:
Not overfeeding and not over-stocking are all you really need to do. I would imagine your fish are in too small of a tank, with a filter that is too small too.
