Are You In Danger of Cadmium Poisoning From Your Drinking Water?
The element cadmium is a heavy metal with atomic weight 112.41. It is near silver, mercury, and gold on the Periodic Chart of the Elements. It is a very malleable heavy metal and its qualities make it both useful and harmful.
The United States alone uses over 10 million pounds of cadmium for industrial purposes. Cadmium is in several metal alloys such as solder, especially that used to solder aluminum. Cadmium is also used in electroplating, nickel plating, engraving, and especially nickel-cadmium batteries.
In spite of its popularity, cadmium can be very dangerous if it is inhaled or swallowed. Only 10 milligrams ingested can initiate symptoms of poisoning. Though nothing has been proven yet, heavy metals like cadmium are suspected causes of Alzheimer's and other brain disorders.
The symptoms of cadmium poisoning may include increased salivation or the opposite as a dry throat, choking, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, chest pain, anemia, and painful spasms of the anal sphincter. "When cadmium dust or powder is inhaled, the first symptoms are a sweet or metallic taste, followed by throat irritation".
Low dose long term exposure to cadmium may cause a cough, a loss in the sense of smell, weight loss, shortness of breath, and tooth staining. Damage to the kidneys and liver may result from excessive exposure.
All this is the bad news. Here is the good news: properly filtered water is virtually free of cadmium. Water filters containing activated charcoal, like the Black Berkey water filters, are able to remove at least 95% of the heavy metals like cadmium from drinking water. The process for doing this is called adsorption. The toxins naturally cling to the surface of the charcoal granules and are thus removed from the water.
Perhaps you are not concerned about the presence of cadmium in your water. If so, consider these points. First, isn't it better to be safe than sorry? Water travels through the ground only a few feet a day; it is certainly possible that it picked up a source of heavy metals somewhere along the way. Second, Berkey Water filters remove much more than just heavy metals. The checklist includes a variety of chlorine compounds, many parasites, and hydrocarbons.
Years ago we could trust any water source as being safe. However, in spite of industry and farming standards about pollution, it is a good idea to exceed the standards of the city water or well water and filter all drinking and cooking water. The consequences of having contaminated water are too serious to neglect.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Real quick! - Can charcoal fiters be used to purify water and vineger combined?
Yes or no is fine for an answer!!
I'm about to do an experiment about purifying water, and I'm going to use sea water and (possibly) sea water with 1 tablespoon of vinegar in it.
One of my methods is a charcoal filter. Will I be able to purify the water with vinegar in it? Or would it still stay in there?
The only reason I wanted to use it was to give the pH levels a difference.
Thanks
Answer:
no not with vinegar in it.
