Aluminum Contamination Is In Your Tap Water
Water contamination by metals such as aluminum is becoming a serious problem. Until the late 1800’s, aluminum was an expensive metal - 90 dollars a pound. But in 1886, Charles Martin Hall developed a cheap, practical method of extracting aluminum from ore. This dropped the price to 2 dollars a pound and made it readily available. Since then it has been used in a variety of ways both as a metal (it is the third most produced metal today), and in compounds such as bauxite or alum.
But aluminum has introduced its own problems. D.R.C. McLachlan did an extensive study and linked the frequency of Alzheimer’s cases with the amount of aluminum in the water supply. He concluded that if the aluminum level in the public water had been kept below 100 micrograms/liter, a fourth or more of the cases could have been prevented. The presence of aluminum in water has also been linked to other problems such as some lung diseases.
The industrial revolution has taken a toll. We are concluding after years of study that most metals like aluminum are harmful to the body when ingested by children or by adults over a long period of time. Especially affected is the nervous system.
It is not so bad that aluminum is found in water since the oceans both contain some, and the body normally has about 9 ppm. It is the accumulation of aluminum in the system that causes problems. The most abundant aluminum compounds are aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide, and these are water insoluble. But other compounds cause medical problems when they leech into the water supplies.
The increasing appearance of Alzheimer’s is alarming and its possible connection with aluminum in drinking water will no doubt motivate all of us to act. This author did act by throwing out the aluminum pan we have been using to boil tea.
Step one for everyone should be filtering our source of drinking water. After all, aluminum will be found in water from wells and city water sources. Though cities usually have a maximum level of between 50 and 200 g/L, further filtering is still wise.
A thorough way to clean out aluminum from drinking water is to distill the water, but this also removes valuable minerals as well as taste. A better plan is to purchase a filter that uses activated carbon filters for they are able to remove 95% of the aluminum in the water. No known disease or problem results from a lack of aluminum in the body so the more we remove, the better!
The best line of activated charcoal filter we are aware of is the Berkey Water Filters. Whether you choose their Imperial Berkey or another model, each set of filters they ship with can be re-cleaned to purify up to 6,000 gallons of water.

Frequently Asked Questions...
If I accidentally stored my Berkey black filter elements wet, are they unusable?
I have a travel Berkey water filtration system. I put the filter away for a few months, and when I got it out again, a rust-colored, mildew-appearing substance had grown on the outside of the black filtration elements. What do I have to do to make them usable again, or should I buy new ones?
Answer:
I would buy new ones. It's better to be safe.......
