Overview

Thank you in advance for helping S.A.V.E. spread the word. We feel strongly that our fast paced society, our lack of regulation on movies, videos, music, TV and the Internet are posing a detrimental effect on today's children. The influence coupled with the break up of the family and in many cases, two working parents, is putting our youth in grave danger. Because we cannot change society, we at S.A.V.E., feel strongly that the responsibility falls in the hands of the education system. Our "Critical Issues" curriculum presently focuses on middle school children. The curriculum encompasses issues, which to many of us (Baby Boomers) are common sense, but unfortunately a foreign language to our children. The course work in grades K through 4th begin with the Golden Rule, basic values, and role playing. 5th and 6th graders deal with issues such as cults, divorce, different kinds of familiar music, movies and their influences. 7th and 8th grades talk about drugs, alcohol, tobacco and substance abuses, as well as peer pressure, conflict-resolution skills, which are consequently taught all the way from 3rd to 8th grade. The curriculum is offered to all schools, private, parochial and public.

Current Education programs that focus on academic performance often leave little opportunity in the regular school curriculum for students to learn conflict and problem resolution skills that will help them integrate in the school and community environment. Left unchecked, anger can escalate. Increasingly we read about students who are acting out their hostilities and directing their anger on schoolmates, staff and visitors, sometimes with tragic results.
